A Few Alternatives To Braces For Your Crooked Teeth

Posted on

If you are like most adults, the idea of getting metal brackets and wires on your teeth to straighten them is far from appealing. While it might have been okay to wear braces as a youngster, it can be a bit embarrassing as an adult. Luckily, there are a few alternatives available to the typical two-year traditional route that can be accomplished by visiting a cosmetic dentist if your teeth are not severely out of whack.

Bonding

To fix a few teeth that are crooked, you can ask about having them bonded. this will involve the dentist filing away the uneven portion of the teeth. A resin is then applied and contoured so that each tooth is perfectly straight. The filing is done so they are not too big in your mouth. The bonding resin will be mixed to match the color of the rest of the teeth in your mouth. In most cases, the treatment can be accomplished in one or two office visits.

Veneers

Another option is to have porcelain veneers attached to the front of your teeth. In many situations, there will be very little filing of the original tooth. However, if necessary to make the smile perfect, some filing may be necessary. The veneers are very thin and will not add much to the dimensions of your teeth. Because they are made of porcelain, they are very strong so you won't have to worry about them chipping or breaking. Like bonding, this option can be completed in just a few office visits.

Invisalign

Invisalign is similar to braces in that they actually move your teeth so that they are no longer crooked. You will be required to wear a plastic retainer that will slowly force your teeth to change their position. while this option will take longer than the others, it does not involve any filing, maintaining the strength and structure of your teeth.

If you would like to whiten your teeth, it is best to have it done before having any bonding or veneers applied. The resin and veneers cannot be whitened so they will keep the color you picked out when they were initially applied. Once you have them, you will need to be sure to avoid foods that will stain your teeth or you will end up with different colors in your mouth.   However, if you use Invisalign, you can undergo teeth whitening treatments as often as you like to keep your smile looking great.
